An Overview
Sue Lambert Trust provides specialist support for people affected by sexual abuse and sexual violence. As part of their work, they wanted to create an online learning programme to help survivors and those supporting them better understand trauma, its effects and the process of recovery.
We partnered with Sue Lambert Trust to bring the programme to life, through seven animated modules and an introductory film. Covering complex and highly sensitive subjects, the series needed to feel clear, compassionate and approachable. We utilised illustration and animation to make difficult information easier to understand without diminishing its seriousness.

The challenge
Handling sensitive subjects with care and clarity
From the outset, we knew the visual approach needed to be carefully considered. The series explores trauma and sexual violence, so it was important that the animation felt warm and approachable without becoming overly light-hearted, clinical or instructional.
Rather than depicting traumatic experiences literally, we developed a visual language built around metaphor, abstraction and restrained character-led storytelling. Complex ideas could be simplified through typography, iconography and diagrams, while illustrated characters were used selectively to bring humanity and emotional connection to the series.
This balance carried across all eight films, allowing us to explore difficult topics consistently while giving each subject the space it needed. Gentle movement, inclusive characters and considered pacing helped create an environment where viewers could engage with the information without feeling overwhelmed.

“It was a joy to work with you all on this project. Thank you again for the opportunity to give voice to some of the things I’ve learned over the last 20+ years of working with survivors, in a way that will help more people / families / communities even in ways that we can only imagine and hope for.”

Research & Strategy
Turning sensitive information into accessible E-learning
Working closely with Sue Lambert Trust, we needed to understand not only the information being communicated, but how audiences might experience it. The programme encourages viewers to engage at their own pace, pausing, revisiting sections and exploring additional information when they feel ready, so our approach needed to support that same sense of control.
Through careful storyboarding, we broke complex subjects into manageable visual ideas, identifying where character-led storytelling could build empathy and where typography, diagrams and iconography could provide greater clarity. This gave each module its own focus while maintaining a consistent visual language across the entire e-learning series.

The Impact
Creating a resource with lasting value
The finished e-learning series gives Sue Lambert Trust a supportive and accessible resource that can reach beyond one-to-one support, helping survivors, their families and wider support networks better understand sexual abuse, trauma and recovery.
Since launching, Sue Lambert Trust has already received positive feedback from people accessing the course, with viewers finding the content helpful. Designed to be revisited at each person’s own pace, the series has the potential to continue supporting individuals, families and communities long after its initial release.
