1. SeterMD

Seter is an up-and-coming animator that looks at hand-drawn effects from animations (mainly Ghibli) and recreates them in After Effects with fairly simple methods. Showing their method breakdowns on their social channels, it makes me want to try to recreate the techniques, and even apply these methods to my own practice.

2. Fortiche

Fortiche is a French animation house that marries 3D animation with a 2d painted feel. Well known for working on Arcane, the studio experiments with different processes within their practice. An inspirational scene that I enjoy immensely is ‘Dynasties and Dystopia’. 3D animation with a tonne of 2D flare that just makes the scene ‘pop’.  With Arcane season 2 just around the corner, I would highly encourage taking a look at the first season!

“It’s always inspiring to see what others can create, and I’m so grateful I can meet these students and potentially help them in some way.”

3. SpilledInk

While both of these creators are known for vlogging and digital art, this new creative project takes things back to basics to rediscover and develop traditional art skills.  While I am a digital artist, I appreciate the importance of keeping physical skills alive, keeping a sketchbook beside my workstation to jot ideas down when I get downtime, SpilledInk ignites my curiosity to experiment with other traditional tools and keep my practice fresh.

4. DeeKayKwon

DeeKayKwon’s style is energetic and cute, and I honestly don’t believe this is made in After Effects at times!  The style is a fusion of Lego and Habbo (if anyone remembers what this is….have a gold star) evokes a sense of nostalgia, and the execution of the animation is gorgeous!  The way the movement is fluid and bouncy within a character rig, as well as having smears and 360 rotation…it’s incredibly inspiring and makes me want to improve my own character rigs!

5. NUA’s Big Book Crit

I’ve had the opportunity to attend the Big Book Crit at NUA for the past few years, an event where creative professionals look at student work and offer guidance for their portfolios and future careers.  While I’m always happy to give feedback to the new generation of creatives, it’s honestly a two way street, giving us professionals a new perspective as to how to evolve our practice. It’s always inspiring to see what others can create, and I’m so grateful I can meet these students and potentially help them in some way.
