SmokeFree Norfolk

A Special Project in Hand-Drawn Animation

For our animation team, SmokeFree Norfolk was one of those rare projects that only comes around every so often. We were tasked with creating a sub-60-second animation to inform pregnant smokers about the risks of smoking during pregnancy. The film would be shown in doctors’ surgeries, on social media, and via Sky AdSmart, with illustrations also used for posters and printed materials. Knowing the potential reach of this project, we wanted to create something truly special. So, we pitched our first-ever hand-drawn animation—and Norwich City Council trusted us every step of the way.

As a Norwich animation company, we knew that hand-drawn animation would be a challenge. Unlike vector-based motion graphics, this technique requires significant time and effort, especially for character animation. Penny, our hand-drawn animation expert, worked alongside Jamie, who crafted the stunning backgrounds. Together, they pushed these principles to the limit, creating a film that felt both warm and engaging. The goal was to inform, encourage cessation, and inspire without passing judgment. To enhance the atmosphere even further, we even tapped into the expertise of the Meantime film team. Joe, our director, applied lighting effects to the interior scenes, adding depth and realism to the hand-drawn lighting. The final result? A short, elegant animation that stands on its own while forming the cornerstone of the larger SmokeFree Norfolk campaign. This project is one we’re incredibly proud of at Meantime. It was our first hand-drawn film, a bold step away from traditional motion graphics, and proof of what can be achieved when creativity meets trust.

If you’re looking for a Norwich animation company that brings stories to life with originality and heart, we’d love to help. Whether it’s a campaign like SmokeFree Norfolk or something entirely different, our team is always ready for the next challenge.
